A Video I decided to make demonstrating that a possible fire hazard exists when using high power or high VA rated 12V garden light transformers to power your garden lights. The hazard exists as the fuse in the transformer is typically too big, and the cable runs out to the lights can be over 10 Meters long, and often you will find the cable resistance is so high, that if an overload or short circuit appears towards the end of the cable, the cable could burn and catch fire, where there is not enough fault current to trip the transformers protection. In fact the short may be just seen as a heavy load and perfectly within the maximum transformers rating. Note: 12V at 400VA is 33A however for the transformer fuse to blow or thermal overload in the transformer to trip the load needs to be considerably more. There are a number of solutions to this problem, other than the ones I have given. Also note that the hazard really only exists with high VA rated transformers, as the smaller units typically do not have enough short circuit fault current capacity to burn the cables, but rather the transformer fails first, tripping the internal thermal fuse.

Recent changes to construction code requires the illumination of deck steps. This is a challenge for contractors and homeowners that are installing a new deck.

When you think of the Frankenstein movies, names like Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Mary Shelley and James Whale come to mind. But have you ever heard of Kenneth Strickfaden? Long entombed in the annals of horror movie fame, Strickfaden is the man whose electrical designs made Frankenstein the movie that it is. He was called "Dr. Frankenstein's Electrician" and was directly responsible for all of the electrical effects used in the monster creation scene. He also created all the electrical effects for the later Frankenstein sequels. He was even a stunt double for Boris Karloff, who was deathly afraid of electricity.

Strickfaden was meticulous about his special effects, concocting various exotic laboratory equipment, as well as securing the use of a Tesla Coil built by the legendary scientist Nikola Tesla himself. Rest assured, all the electricity in the film was real, and the equipment he used to produce them became known, in fandom, as "Strickfadens".

He was responsible for all those breathtaking electrical devices Frankenstein and Fritz, in various movies, clutched, clung to, and recoiled from. Strickfaden also coordinated the memorable lightening bolts that shot across the lab. Without the aid of Tesla's coil, those fantastic discharges would be impossible to create.

It should be noted that Tesla coils are a resonant transformer created by Serbian-American scientist Nikola Tesla around 1891. These coils produce very high voltage, low current and high frequency alternating current electricity. The electrical discharges produced those lighting-like plasma filaments that were so extensively used in the film. Kenneth Strickfaden was considered an innovative special effects genius, especially in the 1930s and 1940s. He worked on movies from Frankenstein to The Wizard of Oz to The Mask of Fu Man Chu. In his later years, he worked on various television series, including The Munsters. With more than 100 motion pictures to his credit, he still managed to give 1500 traveling science demonstrations and lectures across the U.S. and Canada. He remains one of the nearly forgotten heroes of early film and television, where the lightening bolts were real, the laboratory equipment dangerous, and stuntmen walked into electrical storms.

Sorry my camera is dying on me this is the best i could do.. but this is a demonstration of the low voltage side of the transformer being used to charge the battery while the high voltage side runs the electromag spinning the wheel and running the load. here is a 6v cheap lantern battery recharging a dying 9v battery while using a CFL tube to absorb the radiant energy created when theres no battery on the charge end.. if i reverse the wires coming from the transformer then the charge battery will charge at a faster rate, but the CFL wouldn't get enough voltage to light. it would be the equivalent of switching from a quick-charge to a trickle charge which I could make easy with a switch. also near the end of the vid i show that with this small low input setup i can make a tiny continuous spark jump a little gap i made, but i dont like doing it because it can cause a greater spark to jump out inside the reed switch and can cause it to melt and stick becoming useless. with this setup one could make a small jacobs ladder type deal easily. I dont have enough LED's to tell yet, but so far it was able to light about 20 green ones with no problem.

One of the most important steps in installing low voltage outdoor lighting is getting the installation of your landscape lighting transformer correct. However, this is a step that many people don't spend enough time on and mess up as a result. Here are a few steps on how to install the transformer, converter, or power pack that you have for your outdoor lights to make sure that your low voltage lighting system look exactly the way you intended it to.

The first step in installing any lighting transformer is trying to figure out where to place it. You need two things for an ideal installation of your transformer - easy access to an outdoor, weather-proof socket and close access to your lighting fixtures. Most homes will have a few outdoor electrical sockets, but if you have one that is too far away from your light fixtures, you may need to call in a professional electrician to wire one closer for you.

The reason for this is that as you run any electrical cable further from its source, the total amount of power in the line declines due to some of it actually being lost to the cable. This isn't a really big problems with normal household electrical cables because they carry 120v of power. Losing a volt or two or five from this is unlikely to have any effect. However, with low voltage cables you only have 12v to work with. A loss of even a few volts here will make a significant difference in how bright your lights are and whether they actually work at all!

If you can't get the transformer close enough to your light fixtures you will need to up the voltage that your line carries. Sixteen to Twenty-two volts are still considered generally safe for use as low-voltage lighting.

Once you have gotten your transformer close enough to your lights, the only thing that is left for you to do is mount the transformer. You should have it mounted either on the side of your house or on a post that sticks up out of the ground. While your transformer will be weather-proof, you still don't want it sitting in standing water. Sitting in water and mud for long enough will eventually cause it to short-circuit and you will have to go out and get a new one. Avoid this by taking the few extra minutes to mount your transformer.
